Don’t Be Nice, Be A Bitch

It’s a bumper issue this week. We consider how busy is too busy, the joys of traveling alone, why bitches get stuff done, why Corinne Grant is angry over the election debate and how building a business beat one woman’s boredom.

1.  Leading ladies and stay-at-home dads on the rise

Our traditional notions of a “typical” family are constantly being challenged and proven incorrect by changes in family structure, diversity and law.  Discussions around these changes have recently begun to focus on women at work, and the potential role of men as the stay-at-home parent.  If you think these changes are a long way off, check out these stats from the UK, where the percentage of female breadwinners has risen in two decades from 26% to 41%, while the amount of stay-at-home dads has doubled in the same amount of time.

2. Beat boredom; build a business

Josephne FairleyDo you live to work? Or do you work to live?  It may seem like an odd question, but Josephine Fairley, the co-founder of Green & Black’s Organic Chocolate, has come to realise it is a question that may well define your decisions post-retirement.  Upon selling her company to Cadbury’s, Fairley found that she was not just bored, she was becoming boring.  So, to rectify the situation Fairley rolled up her sleeves and dived headlong into a new business project.  Read up on her philosophy of life and her new organic food store and well-being centre here.

3. Are you too busy?

busyThe answer is probably ‘yes’ if you have a job and children.  With many women still carrying a triple burden (job, majority of household work and the majority of childcare work), it is easy to fall into a habit of being perpetually busy.  However, as the old saying goes “No one ever said on their deathbed, ‘I wish I’d spent more time at the office.’” Prowess 2.0: Women in Business looked into it and suggested a few techniques we can all use in our work and home lives to ensure we achieve happiness while still paying the bills.  Check out here.

4.  Bitches get stuff done

Bitches get stuff doneHave you ever worried that if you pull up a co-worker for slacking off, or demand results from your team, you’ll be labeled a “bitch”?  You’re not the only one!  The opposite is true for men, making it much easier for them to fill management positions without fear of name calling or negative workplace relationships. Take some advice from the Content Factory and just be a bitch. Set your standards,  ask for what you want, toss out the tact and speak your mind. If that’s being a bitch, then we should all be one.

5.  Alone doesn’t mean lonely

Solo-Female-TravelSo you’ve planned this awesome holiday to Canada/Argentina/Italy/Japan/Uzbekistan/wherever but your partner is working, the BFF just spent all her savings on a luxury vehicle to celebrate midlife crisis and you’re not allowed to take your cat with you.  Before you ask the stranger at the café across from you if they want to come along, maybe you should consider traveling alone.  Lone female travelers are taking over hotels and hostels on the global stage, proving that it is just as safe and just as fun discovering a new country without a significant other.  If you’ve been thinking about it, check out this great advice from a woman who loves solo travel, because “alone doesn’t mean lonely!”
